Timing Belt
The timing belt connects the crankshaft to camshaft in the engine. The teeth on the belt and on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets ensure that the valves open and close at exactly the right times. From time to time these can break. Normally if breakage occurs it can happen without warning, manufacturer’s guidelines differ from vehicle to vehicle but on average a timing belt should be replaced between 40 and 80 thousand miles or every 8-10 years. If breakage occurs the pistons can come in contact with the valves which would result in a cylinder head overhaul, this can cost considerably more than simply replacing the timing belt.
